What do you want in an academy?

We are over half-way through with our first complete school year at Focus Academy and I have to say I am truly amazed with the student progress!!  Some comments we have received from parents include:

- He tells me he has "real friends" now.

- Other family members have noticed his maturity in just two months!

- He WANTS to go to school.

- The no homework thing is a huge quality of life change for us all. No more battles with him, no more parents getting frustrated with him....we get along much better.

- At Focus they must correct their work to 90% before it is done. So he has learned that its easier to do it right the first time.....which has transferred to all areas of his life.

It is amazing to watch these students make such progress in a matter of months...but i am always looking for ways to keep improving the program.  So I am asking "What would you like to see for your child in an academy?"

My son loves attending Focus Academy and looks forward to school every day! Imagine that! He has far surpassed my expectations for three months at Focus! We are thrilled FOCUS is coming to Katy in the fall! As far as recommendations for the program, Dalton loves the weekly guitar lessons, and is even beginning to look forward to Toastmasters. I loved the class play/movie at Christmas! I would love to see the kids take a Tae Kwon Do class twice a week. This would provide some type of PE as well as teach our kids important self defense and concentration skills. LOVE LOVE LOVE this school!

I'll email what Steph wrote for what she would like to see in a school (plus, why shoudl school be more like Pokemon essay).

Flexibility to adapt to child's educational needs--address the weaknesses and bui9ld on the strengths. Adapt assignments so that they can build on their interest/passions while learning the content needed. Flexibility to adapt to families needs--schedule wise--getting everyone where they need to be with a minimum of stress in am/pm. Transferrable credites so that if they have to transfer back to public they are ontrack/ahead as well as environmentally miserable. Include social/communication skills/emotional growth a. executive functioning (plan work, work plan) into daily work so that it is learned naturally in context and not forced/isolated lessons for which they can shut down during. Coached exposure to real world outside of school through volunteering or work and mixing with larger groups of peers. Some type of exercise--yoga. No homework of course! (this has made a huge differnce for STeph this year--despite still being in public). Oh yes, and the ability ability for the child to pick winning lottery numbers so that they can attend the ideal school!
