Social Groups

Through specialized classes, led by trained "social coaches," students are taught specific strategies, problem-solving techniques and social solutions to help them navigate more effectively through a complex social world.  Classes focus on social "understanding" and life preparation skills through step-by-step instruction, role-playing, hands-on practice and interactive community outings.  Classes are grouped according to age/grade and level of need and are limited to 4-6 students. Students of any age may also be seen individually if they are not yet ready for group classes.  Fall semester classes run from late August through early November - excluding Labor Day.  Spring semester classes run from late January through April - excluding holidays and spring break.

Spring 2010

Pre-School Students

Students, ages 3-5, are placed into our pre-K groups.  The class curriculum varies extremely per class/session and is individualized to meet student and parent goals.

Elementary Students

Students, ages 5-12, are placed according to needs and skill level as determined through initial screening.  The class curriculum varies per class/session and is individualized to meet student and parent goals.

Teens

Students, ages 13-19, are grouped according to skill level and specific need and focus largely on teen-related issues such as managing high school, dating, job/college preparation and independent living skills.

Adults

FOCUS Initiative also works with young adults, on an individual or group basis, to help them learn independent living skills, job readiness, college study skills, personal relationship strategies, organizational and time management techniques.

New classes begin each semester and meet 1 hour per week for 12 weeks at our Stafford office or in the community as scheduled.  Home school groups may be arranged during school hours.  Before students are placed in a class, an informal skills assessment is conducted, at no-charge, to determine appropriate placement.  Contact FOCUS at 281-240-0663 to schedule a skills assessment.
